Why do cell phones always fall on the display?

If you don't pay attention for a moment and then it happens - the smartphone slips out of your hand and falls to the floor. The display is often the worst hit because the device always seems to end up on the sensitive front. Is this a coincidence or is there more to it?

The bread and butter phenomenon

The comparison with a sandwich is obvious. In 1996, British physicist Robert Matthews discovered that sandwiches actually fall more often on the buttered side. To do this, he carried out several tests in which around 150,000 smeared breads were used. The deciding factor that causes the side with the surface to hit the ground first is the fall height. If you drop a loaf of bread from an average-height dining table, it will most likely land on the buttery side, because the height of the table determines the height of the fall and this is only enough for a half rotation and not a full rotation. A possible solution would be to only eat at tables two meters high in the future, as in this case the rotation would be enough for the bread to end up on the bare side.

What does this have to do with smartphones?

The situation is similar to a sandwich with a smartphone. Typically, users drop their devices from a similar height. The cell phone usually slips out of your hand or pocket - or falls off a table. In addition to the height of the fall, the shape and weight of the falling object are also important. Both can have a lasting effect on the rotation. For example, if our smartphones were larger or heavier on average, there would be less chance that they would land on the display in the event of a fall.
